The Terra Luminous Institute occupies an area of 270 hectares of Atlantic Forest in a location continuously threatened by the disorderly urban growth of the São Paulo Metropolitan Region. The Itariru Green Belt Program aims to ensure the preservation of protected areas and buffer zones of the Serra do Mar State Park by forming an extensive ecological corridor of 1,200 hectares by 2025.

The program consists of a continuous and scalable model of sustainable management and occupation, combining social development with the conservation and regeneration of biodiversity in the region.

Our objectifs

PROTECTED TERRITORY

Creation of a continuous area of preserved forest—or biological corridor—connected to the Serra do Mar State Park and inserted into the watershed protection area near the Terra Luminous Institute (ITL).

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Environmental awareness initiatives for residents and landowners, along with the establishment of training centers in bioconstruction and agroecology.

CIRCULAR BIOECONOMY

Sustaining the project through agroecological management, organizing ecotourism initiatives, and promoting the development of ecovillages in the region.

In 2018, with donations from individuals at the Synergos Foundation, 21 hectares of land were acquired for the exclusive purpose of conservation, initiating the establishment of the first phase of the Itariru Green Belt. The program gained greater scope with the mapping of an area of 1,115 hectares between Ribeirão Grande (SP) and the Serra do Mar State Park (PESM). In 2021, with the support of IUCN-NL (International Union for Conservation of Nature in the Netherlands), 96 hectares of land with a high degree of conservation were acquired. An additional 170 hectares are in the process of acquisition, with 150 dedicated to conservation and regeneration. Also identified are 150 hectares of state-owned land, for which we are facilitating annexation to the PESM. There are also 50 hectares of land owned by other local landowners in the process of joining.
