The program ‘EcoLab Atlantic Forest: Environmental Education in Watershed Protection Areas’ provides information and awareness to students and educators from public municipal schools in Juquitiba, an important territory of preserved Atlantic Forest.
The municipality’s low socioeconomic development, with few income-generating opportunities and a large portion of the population in a vulnerable state, coupled with the disorderly urban growth due to proximity to Greater São Paulo’s urban sprawl, has led to consequences such as irregular settlements, deforestation, predatory exploitation, and the adoption of cultural habits incompatible with environmental preservation. Despite having 38 schools in the municipality, the lack of resources and teacher training hinders the implementation of environmental education programs effectively.
The Terra Luminous Institute has prioritized awareness-raising actions, engaging the population in environmental defense through the dissemination of regenerative culture and the revival of the inseparable relationship between humans and nature. The EcoLab aims to connect participants to the socio-environmental issues of the territory through field trips, educational support, training in socio-emotional skills for educators, and the integration of schools into a public event on ecology. The methodology incorporates elements of art education, educommunication, forest therapy, and Nonviolent Communication.
Experiences of environmental studies in nature within the ITL territory and neighboring properties.
Development of socio-emotional skills using Nonviolent Communication.
Training in ecology for educators to step out of the classroom and understand the territory.
Specific educational material tailored to the territory’s reality, focusing on watershed preservation.
