We are a group of individuals who share life and co-create a foundation of regenerative culture within the Atlantic Forest since 2015. We deeply study socio-environmental technologies based on permaculture ethics, reconnecting with our ancestral relationship with nature. For us, living in a community brings personal and systemic healing, fostering bonds of trust that give rise to a new society. Currently, there are 14 people residing and working at Terra Luminous – we are in an expansion phase, with new members joining. “Inspiration that moves and action that transforms” is our motto!
For those who dream of living in a new world, it is necessary to co-create it!
Fabi Maia, co-founder and institutional coordinator of Terra Luminous, is one of the ambassadors of the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) in Brazil. Fabi has attended the GEN European Annual Conference twice, speaking as one of the representatives of Brazilian ecovillages. She also participated in the intensive Train The Trainer (TOT) course for Ecovillage Design in Damanhur, Italy, in 2019.
We are the Brazilian ecovillage with the longest-standing implementation of the Sociocracy system, or Dynamic Governance. We organize our structures and decision-making processes with a focus on equivalence, shared responsibility, self-organization, and transparency.
We base our interactions on NVC to strengthen our listening skills and guide relationships towards a reality where there are no losers or winners, but where everyone's needs and values are taken into consideration.
Weekly, we come together in a session of active listening where each person shares what's alive within them to be heard and cared for by the group. This is an essential moment to "clear the field" and strengthen our connections.

Vagalumens is the social currency that ITL created in 2015 to promote a solidarity economy. It follows a logic of fair sharing, valuing work in exchange for time, services, gifts, and dedication. Many of ITL’s collaborators receive a portion of their monthly salary in Vagalumens, which can be exchanged for Brazilian reais in a monthly sharing circle called “Mânipaiol” (adaptation of “money pile”).
From ITL’s income from services, products, and donations, 20% is directed to the Vagalumens bank and allocated for salary remuneration. Vagalumens can also be used to exchange for services and products from ITL or its partner network when they are not converted into reais.
We have a path of coexistence and experience before someone can become a part of our ecovillage. The first step is to participate in the Beija-flor Volunteer Program, which lasts for one to two months. After that, when there is a match between the volunteer’s profile, dreams, and talents and what Terra Luminous offers and seeks, it’s possible to apply for the Tatu Residency Program. This program involves a commitment of six months to two years living and working (partially or fully) with us. After the one-year period, it’s possible to apply for entry into the ecovillage as a Community Associate, which grants the right to build a house and participate in structural decisions.
Our volunteering programs have varying durations and are designed for those who wish to contribute to ITL’s projects and experience community living.
Mentoring Through the Terra² program, we provide tools and references for groups to cocreate intentional and regenerative communities in harmony with nature.
